First day of practice and cancellation
The competition began with great expectation on Thursday, September 14. Emirates Team New Zealand led by Peter Burling and Nathan Outteridge demonstrated their mastery in challenging conditions, winning all three practice races. However, the first official day of the regatta was marred by torrential rain and adverse weather conditions, leading to the cancellation of the planned regattas.
Day of tension and surprises
Last day of the preliminary regatta
The last day of the 37th America’s Cup event was a confrontation between Emirates Team New Zealand and NYYC American Magic. Despite some highlights, such as the performance of the Orient Express Racing Team, Alinghi Red Bull Racing and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, the third test was affected by technical problems for the Swiss, a situation that affected the results.
The regatta concluded with NYYC American Magic as the winner, closely followed by Emirates Team New Zealand. Results that increase competitiveness and the fight for the title.
Despite the anticipation of an exciting match racing final between NYYC American Magic and Emirates Team New Zealand, the lack of wind prevented the final race from taking place. As a result, the NYYC American Magic was proclaimed champion of the Vilanova i la Geltrú preliminary regatta due to its outstanding performance in the previous tests.
Results of the preliminary regatta of the 37th America’s Cup
We leave you the results of this test:
• The winning team was the NYYC American Magic, representative of the United States, which achieved two victories and a second place in the three races contested.
• The second place was the Emirates Team New Zealand, defending champion and organizer of the next edition of the Copa América in Barcelona, which achieved one victory and two second places.
• Third place went to the Orient Express Racing Team, from France, which surprised with its good performance despite having only 12 days of training with the AC40 boat.
• Fourth place was occupied by the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team, from Italy, which could not repeat the success of the last edition, where it was a finalist.
• Fifth place went to Stars & Stripes Team USA, another American team, which had technical and coordination problems.
• The sixth and last place was obtained by Ineos Britannia, from the United Kingdom, which acknowledged having failed in priorities and being more focused on the prototype of the AC75, the boat that will be used in Barcelona.
These results may vary until reaching the 37th America’s Cup that will be held in the Olympic city in 2024.
This competition was the first of three that will be held before the America’s Cup grand final in Barcelona in 2024. The other two will be in Auckland (New Zealand) and Portsmouth (United Kingdom). The teams hope to achieve the best results in the fight for first place.
This event demonstrated the quality and determination of the participating teams to obtain good results, and set the expectations for the 37th America’s Cup. Despite the weather challenges, the atmosphere and fan support were highlighted by America’s Cup Events CEO Grant Dalton.
Overall, the competition was a success, and the teams will now prepare for future competitions in the hope of improving their results and arriving at the America’s Cup in their best shape.
